Missed-call text-back on iPhone: with a Mac, or a spare Android

Updated October 12, 2026

If your business number rings on an iPhone, you can't install an app that texts back missed callers, because iOS doesn't allow it. You can still get automatic missed-call text-back, two ways, for $0 extra from us. If you have a Mac, the Ringback Mac helper (beta) texts missed callers from your iPhone's own number. Without a Mac, forward the calls you don't answer to a cheap spare Android phone and let Ringback run there: relay mode. This guide explains why it's needed, how to set up each, what changes for you and your customers, and how to test it.

Why an iPhone app can't do it

Automatic text-back needs two things: knowing that a call was missed, and sending a text without anyone tapping Send. iOS gives apps neither. Apps can't read your call history, and an app can only prepare a text that you then send yourself. That's why the iPhone's built-in Respond with Text only works when you decline a ringing call by hand. Android allows both with the right permissions, which is why Ringback is an Android app. A Mac is different: it already shows your iPhone's calls, and Messages on the Mac can send texts through your iPhone, so a small helper on the Mac can do what an iPhone app can't.

Already on a business phone service? Cloud phone systems such as Quo (formerly OpenPhone), RingCentral and Grasshopper run your number on their side and offer their own missed-call auto-replies. If your calls go through one of those, use its built-in feature; the Mac helper and relay mode are for an iPhone on a plain mobile number.

Option 1: the Mac helper (beta), texts from your own number

If a Mac is signed in to the same Apple Account as your iPhone, the Mac already sees your iPhone's calls (Apple's Phone app on Mac lists missed calls), and Messages on the Mac can send texts through your iPhone. The Ringback Mac helper watches for missed calls, asks Ringback what to send (your message, business hours, opt-outs and the once-per-caller window all apply), and sends it through Messages. The customer gets the text from your iPhone's own number. No spare phone, no forwarding, no second line, and your iPhone voicemail keeps working.

  • You need: your iPhone; a Mac signed in to the same Apple Account (with FaceTime signed in); on the iPhone, Calls on Other Devices (Settings › Apps › Phone) and Text Message Forwarding (Settings › Apps › Messages) turned on for that Mac.
  • The Mac must stay on, awake and logged in: a desktop Mac, or a MacBook kept open and plugged in. While it's off or asleep, missed callers aren't texted, and Ringback emails you if it stops checking in.
  • Setup takes about 10 minutes: get a pairing code on the Phone page of your dashboard, paste one command into Terminal on the Mac, give Ringback Helper Full Disk Access (so it can see missed calls) and click OK the first time macOS asks to let it use Messages. Step by step: Mac helper setup.
  • Privacy: the helper reads your call list and Messages on the Mac, but only sends Ringback incoming calls and replies from people Ringback texted. Your other messages never leave the Mac.
  • It's new (October 2026). Test it with a call before you rely on it, and tell us if anything doesn't work.

Option 2: relay mode with a spare Android

How relay mode works

  1. A customer calls your business number on your iPhone. You don't answer.
  2. Your carrier forwards the unanswered call (conditional call forwarding, "forward when unanswered") to a spare Android phone.
  3. The spare Android rings, nobody answers, and Android logs it as a missed call. Ringback, running on that phone, texts the caller back within seconds.
  4. If the caller replies, Ringback puts the reply in your dashboard's lead inbox and emails it to you.

Relay mode: what you need

  • Your iPhone on its normal carrier line (the business number customers call).
  • A spare Android phone, Android 8 or newer. An old or cheap one is fine.
  • A low-cost prepaid line for the spare phone that can receive calls and send texts (unlimited texts is best). You choose and pay for that line; Ringback doesn't sell one.
  • A charger and Wi-Fi or mobile data where the spare phone lives. It has to stay on.

Relay mode: set it up step by step

  1. Set up the spare Android first. Put the prepaid SIM in, check it can make calls and send texts, then follow the normal Ringback setup on it: sign up, install the app, pair it and keep it running. From Ringback's point of view the spare phone is your business phone.
  2. Write down the spare phone's number (10 digits).
  3. Turn on "forward when unanswered" on your iPhone line, using your carrier's code from the list below. Dial it in the iPhone's Phone app keypad and press Call, exactly as written, with the spare phone's number in place of the placeholder.
  4. Leave iPhone Settings › Apps › Phone › Call Forwarding OFF (on older iOS it's Settings › Phone › Call Forwarding). That switch is plain call forwarding to one number, not "forward when unanswered": Apple's guide says to contact your carrier for conditional call forwarding. Turning that switch on would send calls away instead of letting your iPhone ring first.
  5. In Ringback settings, add your iPhone's number under "Your own numbers (never texted)", so Ringback never texts your own line.
  6. Run the test below before you rely on it.

Carrier codes for "forward when unanswered"

These are the codes we could confirm on each carrier's own support page on October 10, 2026. Replace NUMBER with the spare Android's 10-digit number. If your carrier isn't listed or a code doesn't work, check with your carrier: ask for "conditional call forwarding when unanswered" (sometimes called "no answer" or "no reply" forwarding).

Relay mode: what changes, honestly

  • The text comes from the spare phone's number, not your main business number. Customers see a different number from the one they called, so put your business name at the start of the message (Ringback's default message does). When Ringback runs directly on the phone your business line rings on, the text comes from your own number; in relay mode it can't.
  • Replies arrive on the spare phone. Ringback adds each reply from a caller it texted to the lead inbox in your Ringback dashboard and emails it to you. Answer from the dashboard (your answer is sent from the spare phone) or call the customer back from your iPhone, which shows them your main number. STOP and START replies are handled automatically.
  • Caller ID depends on the carrier. A forwarded call normally shows the original caller's number on the spare phone, and Ringback needs that number to text the right person. Most carriers pass it through, but not all, which is why the test below matters.
  • Your iPhone voicemail stops catching unanswered calls. Forwarding on no answer replaces it: unanswered calls go to the spare phone instead of your iPhone voicemail. If the spare line has voicemail on, callers can still leave a message there; record a greeting with your business name.
  • The spare phone must stay on, charged and online. If it goes offline, missed callers aren't texted; Ringback emails you if the phone stops checking in.

Test relay mode before you rely on it

  1. From a different phone (not your iPhone and not the spare Android), call your business number.
  2. Let your iPhone ring without answering. The call should move to the spare Android, which rings too. Don't answer it there either.
  3. On the spare Android, open the call history and check the missed call shows the number you called from. If it shows your iPhone's own number or "Unknown", your carrier isn't passing the caller ID through: turn forwarding off (the "turn off" code) and contact your carrier.
  4. Within about a minute, the phone you called from should get the Ringback text, and the call should appear in your Ringback dashboard.
  5. Reply to that text from the test phone and check the reply shows up in the dashboard inbox and in your email.
  6. If the call went to your iPhone voicemail instead of the spare phone, the forwarding isn't on, or your voicemail answers before the forward happens: dial the code again, or ask your carrier to shorten the ring time.

Stuck? The troubleshooting section of the setup guide covers the spare phone side (permissions, battery settings, offline phones). For other ways to answer missed calls, see missed-call text-back apps and free options.

Questions

Can an iPhone app text back missed calls automatically?

No. iOS does not let apps read your call history or send text messages without you tapping Send, so no iPhone app can notice a missed call and text the caller by itself. The phone's built-in Respond with Text only works when you decline a ringing call by hand.

How does Ringback work with an iPhone?

Two ways. If you have a Mac signed in to the same Apple Account, the Ringback Mac helper (beta) watches the iPhone calls your Mac already sees and sends the text through Messages on the Mac, from your iPhone's own number; the Mac has to stay on. Without a Mac, use relay mode: you set your iPhone line to forward unanswered calls (conditional call forwarding, set with your carrier) to a spare Android phone with its own low-cost prepaid line. Ringback runs on that Android: the forwarded call rings there, goes unanswered, and Ringback texts the caller back.

Will the text come from my business number?

With the Mac helper, yes: Messages on your Mac sends it through your iPhone, from your own number. In relay mode, no: the text comes from the spare Android's number, not your iPhone's number. Put your business name in the message so customers know who is texting.

Does the Mac have to stay on?

Yes. The Mac helper only works while the Mac is on, awake and logged in, so it suits a desktop Mac or a MacBook kept open and plugged in. If the Mac is asleep when a call is missed, that caller isn't texted (calls more than 2 hours old are never texted later), and Ringback emails you if the Mac stops checking in.

Where do customer replies go?

With the Mac helper, replies arrive on your iPhone as normal texts, and Ringback also adds replies from callers it texted to your dashboard inbox. In relay mode, a reply arrives on the spare Android as a normal text. Ringback adds it to the lead inbox in your Ringback dashboard and emails it to you, so you can answer from the dashboard (the answer is sent from the spare phone) or call the customer back from your iPhone.

Is iPhone Settings > Call Forwarding the right setting?

No. The Call Forwarding switch in the iPhone Settings app is plain call forwarding to one number, not "forward when unanswered". Apple's own guide says to contact your carrier for conditional call forwarding. Use your carrier's no-answer forwarding code instead, so your iPhone still rings first.

What happens to my iPhone voicemail?

Forwarding on no answer replaces it for unanswered calls: the call goes to the spare Android instead of your iPhone voicemail. If the spare line has voicemail turned on, callers can leave a message there, in the spare line's mailbox.
