Missed-call text-back apps: free options, Android apps and what to look for

Updated October 9, 2026

If you run a trade business, a missed call is often a missed job: the caller rings the next company on the list. A missed-call text-back app sends that caller a text within seconds, so they know you got the call. Here are the realistic options, from free to paid, with what each one actually does. Phone-feature details are from Apple's, Google's and Samsung's own help pages, checked on October 9, 2026.

Free option 1: decline with a text (built into your phone)

Every major phone can send a canned text when you decline a call:

  • iPhone: on the incoming call screen tap Message and pick a reply; edit the replies in Settings → Apps → Phone → Respond with Text (older iOS: Settings → Phone). Source: Apple Support.
  • Google Phone app (Pixel and many Android phones): "To reject the call and send a text message to the caller, tap Message". Source: Phone app Help.
  • Samsung Galaxy: drag Send message up on the incoming call screen; edit the texts under Phone → Settings → Quick decline messages. Source: Samsung Support.

The catch: this only works when you see the call ringing and choose to decline it. Calls you miss because you're on a ladder, driving, or asleep get nothing. It's a good habit, not an automatic system.

Free option 2: call the missed numbers back yourself

Check your recent calls at every break and text or call each new number. It costs nothing and is the most personal reply, but it depends on you remembering, and a caller who waited two hours may already have booked someone else.

What about Google Voice?

Google Voice gives you a second number with calls, texts and voicemail transcription. Its help center describes missed-call notifications and email alerts for missed calls, but we found no automatic text reply to missed callers (checked October 9, 2026). It can tell you that you missed a call; you still send the text yourself.

And Pixel's Take a Message?

On Pixel 6 and later in the US and some other countries, Google's Take a Message answers calls you miss or decline, plays a greeting and saves a recording and transcript. That's a smarter voicemail. It doesn't text the caller.

Paid option: an automatic missed-call text-back app

Automatic text-back means software that notices the missed call and sends the text with no tap from you. There are two kinds:

  • Cloud phone systems and CRMs (for example HighLevel, Quo, or the AI receptionists sold with Jobber): your calls run through their phone number, and texting usually needs A2P 10DLC registration. See GoHighLevel missed-call text-back and the price comparison.
  • Apps on your own Android phone: the app watches the phone your business line rings on and texts missed callers from that phone's own number. Nothing about your phone service changes. An iPhone can't do this itself, because iOS doesn't let apps send texts by themselves; the workaround is to forward unanswered calls to a spare Android (see missed-call text-back on iPhone).

On Android, Google Play's SMS and Call Log permission policy limits those permissions to default phone/SMS apps and a few listed exceptions. That's why some text-back apps are installed from the maker's website rather than the Play Store, and why some "free" auto-reply apps on the store work only partly or stop working after an update. Whatever you install, check what permissions it asks for and who the developer is.

What to look for in a missed-call text-back app

  • Keeps your number: texts should come from the number the customer called, not a random one.
  • One text per caller, not per ring: someone who calls three times shouldn't get three texts.
  • Skips the right people: your own staff, suppliers you list, withheld numbers, toll-free numbers and short codes.
  • Business-hours and after-hours wording, so nobody waits for a callback at midnight.
  • STOP handled automatically, and no marketing in the auto-text. See is missed-call text-back legal?
  • Replies you'll actually see, and ideally a booking link so callers can book without waiting.
  • The all-in price: monthly fee, setup, per-text and registration fees, contract length and how the trial converts.

Need wording? Copy a message from the auto-reply text templates.

Where Ringback fits

Ringback is an automatic missed-call text-back app for Android, made for contractors. It runs on the Android phone your business line rings on (installed from ringback.0xpi.com, not the Play Store), texts each missed caller from your own number within seconds, at most once per caller in a set window, with separate business-hours and after-hours messages. It skips your team, your do-not-text list and withheld numbers, handles STOP/START, puts replies in a lead inbox and includes an online booking page. It isn't free and it doesn't answer calls. It can't run on an iPhone itself. With an iPhone, the Ringback Mac helper (beta) runs on a Mac signed in to the same Apple Account and texts from your iPhone's own number while the Mac stays on; or you can forward unanswered calls to a spare Android running Ringback (relay mode), and the texts then come from the spare phone's number (iPhone guide).

It costs $17/month (or $170/year) with no setup fee. The 7-day free trial needs a card on file through PayPal: nothing is charged during the trial, then it's charged automatically unless you cancel before the trial ends. Setup steps are in the setup guide.

Questions

Is there a free missed-call text-back app?

Your phone already has a free manual version: iPhone, the Google Phone app and Samsung phones all let you decline a ringing call and send a ready-made text. It only works while you are holding the phone and decide to decline; it does not text people whose calls you simply missed. Fully automatic text-back usually means a paid app or service.

Can my phone automatically text back missed calls?

Not with the standard phone apps, as far as their makers' help pages describe (checked 9 Oct 2026). Apple, Google and Samsung document sending a text when you decline a call by hand, and Google's Take a Message on Pixel answers missed calls and records a message rather than texting the caller.

Does Google Voice text back missed calls automatically?

We found no automatic missed-call text reply in the Google Voice help center (checked 9 Oct 2026). It offers missed-call notifications and email alerts, so you still have to text the caller back yourself.

Why do missed-call text-back apps need Android?

An app has to see that a call was missed and then send a text without you tapping anything. Android allows that with the right permissions; iPhone does not let apps send texts on their own (an iPhone line can still forward unanswered calls to an Android phone that runs such an app, or, with Ringback, use a Mac signed in to the same Apple Account to send the text through Messages). On Android, Google Play also restricts which apps may use the SMS and Call Log permissions, so some auto-reply apps are distributed outside the Play Store.

Ringback works on an Android phone your business line rings on, or with an iPhone plus a Mac (Mac helper, beta) or a spare Android: see missed-call text-back on iPhone.
