Missed-call text-back for handymen: answering new jobs while you're up a ladder
Updated October 10, 2026
Most handymen work alone or with one helper. Up a ladder, running a saw or lying under a sink, the phone goes unanswered, and the caller with a list of small jobs tries someone else. A missed-call text-back sends them a text from your own number within seconds, asking what needs doing, so the job is waiting for you when you come down.
The calls handymen get
- Job lists: a sticking door, a loose railing, a drywall patch, a fixture swap, often several in one visit.
- Mounting and assembly: TVs, shelves, curtain rods, flat-pack furniture.
- Landlords and property managers with turnover repairs between tenants.
- Urgent small fixes: a door that won't lock, a broken window latch, a leaking trap.
- Jobs you may not take, such as work that legally needs a licensed trade.
When handymen miss calls
- On a ladder or using power tools, where stopping isn't safe.
- Working alone, with nobody else to pick up.
- In a customer's home, where taking another customer's call feels rude.
- At the hardware store or driving between jobs.
Example texts for handymen
On a job: "Hi, it's Mike at Mike's Handyman Service. I'm on a job and can't pick up. Reply with what needs fixing (a photo helps) and your address, and I'll call you back when I'm done. Reply STOP to opt out."
Job lists: "Mike's Handyman Service, sorry I missed you. Got a few things that need doing? Send the whole list with photos and I'll tell you roughly how long it will take, or book a time: [link]"
Evening: "Mike's Handyman Service here. Done for the day but I got your call. Reply with what needs fixing and I'll get back to you tomorrow morning."
After hours and urgent fixes
A handyman's urgent calls are small but real: a back door that won't lock at night, a cabinet hinge off before guests. If you'll take a quick evening job, the text can ask whether it's urgent; if you won't, give the morning callback time. For anything that sounds like a gas leak, live wiring or a burst pipe, the reply should point to the utility, an electrician or a plumber, not to you.
What to ask when they reply
- The whole list, so you plan one visit instead of three.
- A photo of each job, and measurements: TV size and wall type, door width, the size of the drywall hole.
- Who supplies materials: do they have the fixture or shelf, or should you bring it?
- When the house was built, if the job means sanding or cutting painted surfaces. The EPA's lead Renovation, Repair and Painting rule requires anyone paid to disturb paint in homes built before 1978 to be lead-safe certified (EPA RRP program page, checked October 9, 2026).
Tools handymen use to run the business
Many handymen run on a phone calendar plus an invoicing app; others use a field-service app such as Jobber or Housecall Pro for quotes and invoices. Ringback adds the missed-call text and a booking page for "come and look" visits, and doesn't connect to either.
Where Ringback fits
Ringback is missed-call text-back with a booking page, not an answering service or job software. It runs on the Android phone your business line rings on (or, with an iPhone, on a Mac with the Mac helper, beta), texts each missed caller from your own number (separate business-hours and after-hours messages, STOP/START handled) and puts replies in one inbox. $17/month or $170/year, no setup fee; the 7-day free trial takes a card through PayPal and is charged when it ends unless you cancel.
Related trades: painters and electricians. Overview: missed-call text-back for contractors.
Questions
What should a handyman text a missed caller?
Something personal and short: Hi, it is Mike at Mike's Handyman Service, I am on a job and cannot pick up. Reply with what needs fixing (a photo helps) and I will call you back. Add Reply STOP to opt out.
How do I quote handyman jobs by text?
Ask for the whole list of jobs and a photo of each, plus measurements where they matter (a TV size, a door width). From that you can estimate the time and offer a half-day or full-day booking, or a visit to look first.
What about jobs I am not allowed to do?
Some states and cities require a licensed electrician, plumber or contractor for certain work or above a certain job size. When a reply describes that kind of job, say so and point them to the right trade; a quick honest no beats a call that never comes.
Ringback works on an Android phone your business line rings on, or with an iPhone plus a Mac (Mac helper, beta) or a spare Android: see missed-call text-back on iPhone.
