Missed-call text-back for contractors: how it works and what to look for

Updated October 10, 2026

Missed-call text-back sends an automatic text to anyone whose call you didn't answer, usually within seconds of the call ending. The caller learns you got their call, gets a way to book or reply, and is less likely to ring the next company on the list.

How it works

  1. A customer calls your business number and nobody picks up (you're on a roof, under a sink, or it's 9 pm and a locked-out caller needs someone now).
  2. The text-back system sees the missed call and sends a text from your number, for example: "Hi, this is Bob's Plumbing. Sorry we missed your call! Book here: … or reply with what you need and we'll call you right back. Reply STOP to opt out."
  3. If they reply, the reply lands somewhere you'll see it (an app, a dashboard, an email alert), and you answer or call back.

What a good first text includes

  • Your business name, so the text isn't mistaken for spam.
  • One clear next step: a booking link, or "reply with what you need".
  • Different wording after hours, so nobody expects a callback at midnight.
  • "Reply STOP to opt out", and a system that actually honours STOP (and START) without you doing anything.

Who should never get the text

A sensible system skips your own and your team's numbers, a "do not text" list (suppliers, family), withheld or "No Caller ID" numbers, toll-free numbers and short codes, and anyone who has replied STOP. It should also text the same caller at most once in a window (for example, once every 2 hours), however many times they ring. For the rules behind this, see is missed-call text-back legal?

Questions to ask before you choose a tool

  • Does it keep my existing number? Some tools need you to move to their phone number or forward calls to one.
  • What does it cost all-in? Monthly price, setup fee, per-user charges, per-text or carrier registration fees.
  • Where do replies go, and can I answer from my phone?
  • Is there a booking page, or do I need a separate booking tool?
  • Contract and trial: month to month? Free trial or money-back?

How Ringback does it

Ringback runs on the Android phone your business number already rings on, so texts come from your own number and nothing about your phone service changes. You get business-hours and after-hours messages, automatic STOP/START handling, a lead inbox with replies from the dashboard, and an online booking page with confirmations and day-before reminders. It costs $17/month (or $170/year) with no setup fee. See the price comparison or the setup guide. Ready-to-copy wording for more trades: auto-reply texts for missed calls.
