Electrician answering service: live, AI or missed-call text-back (2026 prices)

Updated October 9, 2026

Electricians miss calls for the same reason every trade does: you are on a ladder, in a crawlspace or inside a live panel. What makes electrical calls different is the mix. A few are genuinely dangerous, many are quote requests that the caller is also sending to two other electricians, and the rest are small jobs that just need a time. An electrician answering service is anything that makes sure each of those callers gets a response, and the right choice depends on which of those calls you lose most.

The calls an electrician actually needs covered

  • Safety and outage calls: a burning smell, a hot or buzzing panel, part of the house dead, a breaker that will not reset. These need a fast human decision and a clear safety line, not a voicemail.
  • After-hours calls: mostly people who found you in the evening and want a call back tomorrow; occasionally a real emergency.
  • Estimate requests: panel upgrades, EV chargers, generators, rewires. The homeowner is often calling several shops, so speed of reply matters more than a person picking up.
  • Permit and inspection calls: customers, general contractors and inspectors asking about schedules. These need a message taken accurately and passed to the office, not a sales pitch.
  • Small jobs: outlets, fixtures, fans. Easy to book online.

Option 1: a live answering service

Human agents answer overflow and after-hours calls from your script, take details and pass urgent calls to whoever is on call. Published prices, from each company's own pricing page, checked October 9, 2026 (they change; follow the links):

ServiceHow it billsPublished plans
Specialty Answering ServicePer minute, billed by the second$44/month plus $1.54 a minute; $159 for 100 minutes ($1.44 per extra minute); $269 for 220; no setup fee, month to month, 14-day free trial
MAP CommunicationsPer minutePay as you go $49/month plus $1.37 a minute; $179 for 125 minutes ($1.30 extra); $339 for 250 ($1.28); no long-term contracts
PATLivePer minutePay as you go $49/month plus $2.99 a minute; $99 for 50 minutes ($2.29 extra); $189 for 100 ($2.09); 14-day free trial, no contracts
RubyPer minute$250/month for 50 minutes, $395 for 100, $720 for 200; no setup fees
  • Best at: the dangerous call at 9 p.m., where a calm person with your script and an on-call number matters.
  • Watch for: extra charges for patching calls through, holidays or add-ons (read the fee table, not just the headline), agents who do not know your service area or pricing, and a storm week multiplying your minutes.

Option 2: an AI receptionist

A voice bot answers every call at once, asks your questions and books or takes a message. Published examples checked October 9, 2026: Smith.ai's AI receptionist is free for 25 calls a month ($3 a call after) and $150 a month for 75 calls; Rosie is $49 a month for 250 minutes; Goodcall is $79 a month for 100 unique customers (79¢ each after).

  • Best at: never sending a caller to voicemail, and booking routine visits.
  • Watch for: how it handles "I smell burning" (it should give a safety line and transfer, never troubleshoot), and callers who hang up on a bot. More in AI receptionists for trade businesses.

Option 3: missed-call text-back, the cheaper layer

Not every call an electrician misses is an emergency; many are estimates and small jobs. For those, a text from your own number within seconds ("Bright Electric here, we're on a job. If you smell burning or see sparks, leave the area and call 911. Otherwise reply with what you need or book here") keeps the caller from ringing the next shop, and lets them send a photo of the panel for a quote. It is usually a flat monthly price with no minutes to count. More electrician wording, including telling a utility outage from a fault: missed-call text-back for electricians.

It does not answer the call. If you advertise 24/7 emergency service, you still need a person on call or a live service at night; text-back is the safety net under it, so a call that still goes unanswered gets a reply.

Which mix fits your shop

  • One-truck or small residential shop: text-back on every missed call, your own phone for real emergencies.
  • Shop with an office and a service department: text-back for overflow while the office line is busy, an on-call rotation at night.
  • Shop selling 24/7 emergency or commercial service contracts: a live service or AI receptionist after hours, with text-back behind it.

What to put in any answering script

  • A one-line safety instruction for burning smells, sparks, hot panels and downed lines (leave the area, call 911 or the utility), and who gets woken up.
  • Service area, and the jobs you do not take.
  • For estimates: address, the job (panel, charger, generator), and permission to text for photos.
  • For permit and inspection calls: name, job address, permit number if they have it, and who to pass it to.

Where Ringback fits

Ringback is missed-call text-back and online booking, not an answering service: it never answers or talks on a call. It runs on the Android phone your business line already rings on, so every missed caller gets a text from your own number within seconds, with separate business-hours and after-hours messages, a booking link and one inbox for replies. It costs $17/month (or $170/year) with no setup fee. The 7-day free trial needs a card on file through PayPal; nothing is charged during the trial, then it is charged automatically unless you cancel before the trial ends. Questions

How much does an answering service for electricians cost?

From the vendors' own pricing pages on October 9, 2026: live per-minute services start around $44 to $49 a month plus a per-minute rate (Specialty Answering Service $44 + $1.54/min; PATLive and MAP Communications $49 pay-as-you-go), and bundles run from $99 for 50 minutes (PATLive) to $250 for 50 minutes (Ruby). AI receptionists list plans from $0 (Smith.ai, 25 calls) to $49–$79 a month (Rosie, Goodcall). Missed-call text-back is usually a flat monthly price.

Should an answering service give electrical advice to a caller?

No. A good script tells callers who smell burning, see sparks or have a hot panel to leave the area and call 911 or the utility, then passes the call to whoever is on call. Agents and bots should take details, not troubleshoot.

Is missed-call text-back the same as an answering service?

No. Nobody answers the call. The caller gets a text from your business number seconds after the missed call, with a way to reply or book. It covers quote and booking calls cheaply, but true emergencies at night still need a person on call or a live service.

Ringback works on an Android phone your business line rings on, or with an iPhone plus a Mac (Mac helper, beta) or a spare Android: see missed-call text-back on iPhone.
