AI receptionist for plumbers and small trade businesses: what it does, what it costs, where text-back fits
Updated October 9, 2026
An AI receptionist is a voice bot that answers your business calls. It greets the caller with your business name, asks the questions you set (what's wrong, the address, how urgent), and then books a slot, takes a message, or transfers the call to you. For a small trade business it is the cheapest way to have something answer every call, day or night.
What it is good at
- Answering every call at once. No busy signal during a cold snap or a storm.
- Routine bookings such as drain cleaning, tune-ups and quote visits, if it connects to your calendar.
- Filtering spam and sales calls before they reach your phone.
Where it falls short
- Some callers hang up on a bot, especially older homeowners and anyone stressed about water on the floor.
- Setup takes work. It only knows what you tell it about your services, area, prices and emergencies, and wrong answers are on you.
- Usage pricing. Every plan in the table below includes a set number of calls, minutes or customers and charges for more, so a busy month costs more.
What AI receptionists cost (published prices)

Field-service platforms sell their own: Jobber's Receptionist is an add-on to a Jobber plan (see Ringback vs Jobber Receptionist). Live human receptionists cost several times more; see plumbing answering service cost and virtual receptionists for small business (live and AI side by side).
Before you buy one, ask
- What happens on an emergency call: does it transfer to you, and what if you don't pick up?
- Does it book into the calendar or field-service software you already use?
- What would your busiest month have cost on its pricing?
- Do you keep your number (call forwarding), or does it need a new one?
- Can you hear recordings and read transcripts of every call?
When missed-call text-back is enough
If most of your missed calls are people who want to book, get a quote or know you got the call, you may not need anything to answer at all. Missed-call text-back sends a text from your own number seconds after the missed call; the caller replies or books, and you answer when your hands are free. No bot talks to your customers, and the price is flat. It is weaker for real emergencies, where somebody still has to call back fast.
A common setup for a small shop: text-back on every missed call during the day, and either your own phone or an AI receptionist after hours.
Where Ringback fits
Ringback is missed-call text-back and online booking, not an AI receptionist: it never answers or talks on a call. It runs on the Android phone your business number already rings on, so texts come from your own number with no forwarding. It costs $17/month (or $170/year) with no setup fee and a 7-day free trial. Compare it with Smith.ai or CallRail, or read how missed-call text-back works.
Ringback works on an Android phone your business line rings on, or with an iPhone plus a Mac (Mac helper, beta) or a spare Android: see missed-call text-back on iPhone.
