Missed-call text-back for locksmiths: answering lockouts while you're on a job

Updated October 10, 2026

A locksmith's phone rings hardest when the person calling is stuck on a doorstep or in a car park. Someone locked out does not wait for a voicemail callback; they ring the next listing. While you're picking a lock or drilling a cylinder, a missed-call text-back sends them a text from your own local number, with your shop's name on it, so they know a real locksmith has their call.

The calls a locksmith gets

  • Lockouts: house, car, office and storage unit lockouts. The caller wants an arrival time.
  • Lost or broken keys: car key replacement and programming, a key snapped in a lock.
  • Rekeys and lock changes: after a move-in, a lost set of keys, a tenant leaving or a break-in.
  • Commercial work: master-key systems, panic hardware, access control, safes.

When locksmiths miss calls

  • Hands on a lock, picking, impressioning or drilling.
  • Driving to a lockout across town.
  • Cutting and programming a car key in the van.
  • Late at night, when lockouts happen and a one-person shop is asleep.

Example texts for locksmiths

Working hours: "Hi, this is Main Street Lock and Key. We're on a job and missed your call. Locked out? Reply with your address and home, car or business, and we'll call with a time. Rekey or lock change: book here [link]. Reply STOP to opt out."

Night, with on-call cover: "Main Street Lock and Key here. If you're locked out, reply with your address and we'll tell you whether our on-call locksmith can come tonight. If a child or pet is locked in a car, call 911 now."

Car keys: "Main Street Lock and Key, sorry we missed you. For a car key, reply with the year, make and model and whether you have any working key, and we'll call you back with a price and time."

After hours and emergencies

Lockouts are the night trade. If you don't go out after a certain hour, the text should say so, so the caller can find someone who does instead of waiting on you. If you do, ask for the address and the type of lockout, then call back with an honest arrival time. Anyone with a child or pet shut in a car gets a 911 line first. Commercial alarm and access-control faults after hours are usually best handled with a phone call, so the text should say when you'll ring.

What to ask when they reply

  • Home, car or business, and the address or where the car is parked.
  • For a car: year, make and model, and whether any working key exists.
  • ID: ask them to have ID or proof of address ready for a home lockout.
  • For rekeys: how many doors, and a photo of one lock so you bring the right pins.

Rekeys and commercial jobs

Rekey and lock-change callers can usually wait a day, so they are easy to book by text. Commercial enquiries about master-key systems or access control are worth a same-day phone call; the text that says when you'll ring keeps them from calling round meanwhile.

What locksmiths use to run jobs

Plenty of locksmiths work from a phone, a calendar and an invoicing app; larger shops use a general field-service app such as Housecall Pro or Jobber for dispatch and invoices. Ringback doesn't replace or connect to those. Its booking page works for rekeys and installs, and lockouts stay a callback.

Where Ringback fits

Ringback is missed-call text-back with a booking page, not an answering service or job software. It runs on the Android phone your business line rings on (or, with an iPhone, on a Mac with the Mac helper, beta), texts each missed caller from your own number (separate business-hours and after-hours messages, STOP/START handled) and puts replies in one inbox. $17/month or $170/year, no setup fee; the 7-day free trial takes a card through PayPal and is charged when it ends unless you cancel.

Fill-in wording: text-back templates. Related trades: garage door companies and towing companies. Overview: missed-call text-back for contractors.

Questions

What should a locksmith text a missed caller?

Your shop name, and for lockouts one request: reply with your address and whether it is a home, a car or a business, and we will call you back with a time. Rekeys and lock changes get your booking link. End with Reply STOP to opt out.

How do I show I am a real local locksmith in a text?

Use your real business name, text from your own local number, and say what you will do next. Callers who have run into call-centre lookalikes respond better to a named shop than to a generic dispatch message.

What if a child or pet is locked in a car?

The reply should tell them to call 911 first. Emergency services can respond to a child or animal in danger faster than any locksmith can drive there.

Should I ask for ID before a home lockout?

Yes. Ask the caller to have ID showing the address ready, or other proof they live there. Asking in the text sets the expectation before you arrive.

Ringback works on an Android phone your business line rings on, or with an iPhone plus a Mac (Mac helper, beta) or a spare Android: see missed-call text-back on iPhone.
