Missed-call text-back that keeps your number (no 10DLC wait)
Updated October 26, 2026
Short answer: to text back missed calls from the number you already have, with no port and no carrier-registration wait, the text has to go out from the phone your number rings on. On Android an app can do that: a free automation such as IFTTT, a cheap auto-SMS app, or a business tool such as Ringback ($17/month (or $170/year)). Services that text from a business number, such as Quo, do far more as phone systems, but they need a Quo number and an approved carrier registration before they can text US numbers.
The four options at a glance
From each vendor's own page on October 26, 2026. We did not test the IFTTT applet or the $2 app.
| Your number | Wait before the first text | Price | What you get / the catch | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IFTTT applet ("Send an automatic Android SMS when you miss a call") | Kept (sends from your Android phone) | None stated | IFTTT has a free tier | A general-purpose automation. The applet page describes no STOP handling, no business hours, no limit on repeat texts to the same caller and no inbox for replies. Check it still runs on your phone. |
| $2 auto-SMS app (e.g. Auto SMS (PRO)) | Kept (sends from your Android phone) | None stated | $2 one time | Sold as an APK file you install yourself. Personal auto-reply apps are not built around opt-outs, a do-not-text list or a lead inbox; check what it does before using it for customers. |
| Quo (formerly OpenPhone), pricing | A Quo number: new, or yours ported (most ports 3–7 business days) | No texting to US numbers until A2P 10DLC registration is approved: most in 24–48 hours, some up to 20 days | $19/user/month ($15 billed yearly), $19.50 one-time registration, plus a $1.50–$3 monthly messaging fee | A full phone system (calls, texts, shared inbox, iPhone and desktop apps). Missed-call auto-replies on every plan, at most one per contact every 3 hours; they are set up on the web or desktop app, not the mobile app. |
| Ringback (ours) | Kept: the app sends from the SIM in the Android phone your line rings on | None: no port, no new number, no registration; about 15 minutes to set up | $17/month (or $170/year) per business line, no setup fee; 7-day free trial, no card to start | Only missed-call text-back: business-hours and after-hours texts written for your trade, one text per caller per 2 hours, never texts your team, do-not-text list or withheld numbers, STOP/START handled, URGENT replies alert you, a lead inbox and a booking page. Needs an Android phone on the line (or an iPhone with a Mac or a spare Android). It does not answer calls. |
Why some tools make you wait
When software texts customers from a business number, US carriers treat it as application-to-person (A2P) traffic and require the business to register its brand and campaign (A2P 10DLC). Quo charges a $19.50 one-time fee for that review, and "you're not able to message US numbers while waiting for your registration approval" (Quo help center). RingCentral's pricing page says the same in fewer words: "TCR Registration is required for SMS/MMS". If you also move your existing number to the new service, add the port: most take 3–7 business days, per Quo.
A text sent from the SIM card in your own phone is an ordinary text on your mobile plan, not A2P 10DLC traffic, so there is no campaign to register (more in is missed-call text-back legal?). Your plan's terms and your carrier's spam filtering still apply, so keep it to one text per caller, only to people who called you.
Free automation vs a text-back tool
An automation that fires on every missed call is easy to build. What makes it safe to use on customers is everything around the text:
- Who not to text: your own and your team's numbers, family, a do-not-text list, withheld numbers, emergency numbers and short codes.
- How often: one text per caller in a window, so someone who rings three times gets one text, not three.
- Opt-outs: a reply of STOP has to stop all future texts to that number, with one confirmation (see the rules).
- Business hours: a different text when you are closed.
- Replies: one place to see who wrote back, so a lead isn't lost in your personal messages.
Ringback does all of these out of the box. A free applet or a $2 app may do some of them; check before you rely on it for a business.
When Quo is the better choice
- You want a new business line separate from your personal phone, or a team sharing one number and inbox.
- Your business line is on an iPhone and you have no Mac or spare Android: Quo's apps work natively on iPhone.
- You want an AI agent to answer calls (Quo's Sona) rather than a text. See Ringback vs Quo and Quo pricing.
Starting the same day with Ringback
Sign up (7-day free trial, no card to start), install the app on the Android phone your business number rings on, allow its permissions, and pair it with a code from your dashboard. The next missed call gets your text from your own number. Every step, and what the app can and can't access, is in the setup guide (see is this app safe?).
IFTTT, Quo and Auto SMS are trademarks of their owners. Ringback is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any of them.
Questions
Can I get missed-call text-back without changing my number?
Yes, if the text goes out from the phone your number already rings on. An Android app can do that: a free IFTTT applet, a cheap auto-SMS app, or Ringback. Services that text from their own business number, such as Quo, need a Quo number: a new one, or your number ported to Quo (most ports take 3-7 business days, per Quo).
Why do some missed-call text-back tools make you wait days?
Texts that business software sends from a business number are A2P traffic, and US carriers require that sender to be registered (A2P 10DLC). Quo, for example, cannot text US numbers until the registration is approved: "most approvals happen within 24-48 hours; others have remained in pending status for up to 20 days" (Quo help center, October 26, 2026). A text sent from the SIM in your own phone is an ordinary text on your mobile plan, so there is nothing to register, though your plan terms and carrier spam filters still apply.
Is there a free way to text back missed calls on Android?
IFTTT lists an applet called "Send an automatic Android SMS when you miss a call", and auto-reply apps such as Auto SMS (PRO) sell for about $2 (as an APK you install yourself). We did not test either. Before relying on one for a business, check that it skips your family and team, texts each caller only once in a while, honors STOP replies, and shows you who replied.
How much does Ringback cost?
Ringback is $17 a month or $170 a year per business line, with no setup fee and a 7-day free trial, no card to start. It runs on the Android phone your business number rings on, or with an iPhone and a Mac (Mac helper, beta) or a spare Android.
Ringback works on an Android phone your business line rings on, or with an iPhone plus a Mac (Mac helper, beta) or a spare Android: see missed-call text-back on iPhone.
